THE GOLDEN GIRL

Behind the Scenes with Team New Balance Powerhouse Jenny Simpson

It's safe to say that when New Balance signed Jenny Simpson onto their roster of sponsored athletes, they started a revolution. Aligning New Balance with Jenny, then already an American record holder, multi-time NCAA Champion and an Olympian, changed the face of excellence. As the quintessential New Balance girl, Jenny brought talent, accolades, charisma, and determination to a brand already known for quality and tradition. In New Balance, Jenny qualified for a second Olympic team, ran to a World Championship title, worked with NB footwear designers to create a signature shoe (the NB 890), and became the most decorated US middle distance runner of all time. A strong, independent woman, Jenny has changed the face of American distance running.

“JENNY HAS CHANGED
  THE FACE OF AMERICAN
  DISTANCE RUNNING.”

But champions must come from somewhere—and in Jenny's case, developing her running prowess in Oviedo, Florida contributed to her success as much as choosing to train at the University of Colorado. As easy as it may be to pin her success on talent alone, it took hard work and discipline, beginning in high school, to transform Jenny into the icon she is today. Her career began the same place every other high school runner's began: day one of cross-country practice, learning how to do drills, having the patience to slog through unfamiliar workouts, and having the passion to compete. But whether she lines up on the Ovedio HS track or the Olympic final, Jenny brings the same level of fierceness, discipline, and desire. She has stamped her place in history—and she's just getting started.

SHE HAS STAMPED HER PLACE IN HISTORY—AND SHE’S JUST GETTING STARTED.

Q

What first sparked your passion for running?

Winning age group awards at local 5ks organized by my local run specialty store.

Q

What was your biggest motivation to continue your running career after high school?

My college coach, the best college coach, believed I could be good.

Q

Now that you've won a World Championship, how have your goals changed and evolved? What is your current number one goal?

Winning medals will always be the number one goal.

Q

How do you stay motivated when you don't have a race on the horizon or when you hit a hard block of training?

I am so incredibly fortunate to be able to pursue my dreams for a living. When I drive to a run, I know I'm passing other people driving to an office. I'm so grateful I'm the one driving to the trails and that feeling of gratefulness is my motivation.

Q

What advice do you have for young runners hoping to one day follow in your footsteps?

Don't worry that your training system isn't sophisticated enough. If you're young, the best way to improve your running is to just keep running!
